this dog was hidden away in a public domain archive with zero explanations as to who, where, or what he is. but those eye patches are really interesting! can anyone weigh in?

The eye patches and body type makes me think some sort of flock guardian dog, like the Caucasian Ovcharka. Though, Caucasians are typically “heavier” looking dogs. There are also Carpathian Sheepdogs will less weight and look similar. Look thru the list with me!

This is a Labrador retriever from France with what appears to have the somatic black spot mutation that appears in golden and Labrador retrievrs on occasion. It is not inherited, but the cells where the black spots are located do not have the e/e mutation that causes the yellow to red coat. Instead, this somatic muation makes the cells E/e, which gets expressed as black or liver. These dogs are sometimes called mosaics.
